In 1865 travelers saw, what was then, the Eureka Hotel as they made their way to search for Gold.  In 2000 we saw it not as gold but as a gem.  Run down, weary and falling apart from 120 years of teamsters, draymen and cowboys followed by many years of neglect, she beckoned us in. We had no idea what impact this building would come to have on so many people. This building, once again would be alive with fragrance of food cooking and laughter, the footsteps of children and the chatter of grandmas.  In place of drays and horses would be buses and cars.  We imagined the smell of fresh coffee and home baked scones blending with the warmth of timber walls as diners felt a sense of homeliness. The Eureka Hotel (Former), the oldest known building in North Queensland was about to have a new life.  Our dream was to become a reality and  The Hervey's Range Heritage Tea Rooms were born.

What we did not imagine, was how popular the Tea Rooms would become in such a short time. Every week hundreds of people drive up the mountain to enjoy our dream. Then they come back and bring their visitors!!!!

We offer a quite different experience to any other restaurant in the region if not the country, as there is only one oldest building in North Queensland. The building has been preserved and offers an opportunity for our patrons to dine in comfortable seating while surrounded by solid timber walls cut by axe and adze by our pioneers, still in original condition in 1865 (the year Ned Kelly turned 10 years old). This has been recognized on both the State and Federal Heritage Registers as an important and successful preservation project.  It is not essential for our visitors to walk through the building, it is however set up to encourage the flow through, therefore allowing visitors to see and touch each part of the timber slab walls and hand cut uprights. The wood stove, old furniture, old china and bric-a-brac take people back down memory lane.  It truly is a special experience.

Constructed in 1865, it is agreed that this building played a key role in the exploration and development of North Queensland.  We use this as the cornerstone of our heritage stories and presentations.  Hence when customers come to the Tea Rooms, they can experience multiple stories on Australian pioneering history and architecture blended with home style meals, cakes, scones and espresso coffee.  We offer not only a cup of coffee but a complete experience.  The drive up the range is spectacular, the ambience can't be created - it is the soul of the property.  The building is steeped in history - then there's the food.
